Deaf and Hearing Sciences Minor

The Deaf and Hearing Sciences minor provides students with a foundation in the anatomy and physiology of the hearing mechanism and deepens an awareness of the impact of hearing loss on everyday life and function. Students will also take classes in American Sign Language. This minor is appropriate for students planning to go into professions specifically related to hearing and deafness, audiology, and speech pathology. It may be of interest to students planning to pursue careers in education and health related fields where they might be working with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. Such professions could include Special Education, Physician’s Assistant, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Nursing.   

Students from all majors who have earned between 45 and 60 credits and have a minimum 3.0 GPA are eligible to apply for this minor.

Applying for the Deaf and Hearing Sciences Minor

To apply to the Deaf and Hearing Sciences minor, please visit the PHHP Undergraduate Minor Submission Page. To start the minor in Summer B or Fall semester, you must apply by May 15th. To start the minor in Spring semester, you must apply by October 15th.

Note: Meeting the eligibility requirements for the deaf and hearing sciences minor DOES NOT guarantee that you will be approved.

Minor Courses

Students accepted into the minor are required to complete 17 total credits.

Required Courses (17 Credits)

SPA3032 Fundamentals of Hearing must be taken before SPA4321 Audiologic Rehabilitation.

Due to overlap with their major courses, CSD students will also be required to take ASL1130 American Sign Language 3.

Current Communication Sciences and Disorders students and other College of Public Health and Health Professions majors will be registered for available course before minor students.
